‘Why don’t we just use the table?’ says Dad.

‘Where’s your sense of romance? And adventure?’ Mum says. ‘The table’s the easy option. Let’s go further afield.’

So we walk into the bush with all our food and find a flat area between tall trees where Lexie and I put the picnic blanket.

‘I knew the rug would be useful,’ Mum sings as she opens paper parcels of fresh ham and salami. ‘It spends all year in the cupboard, getting musty, so it must be happy being out for once.’

‘For goodness sake, it doesn’t have feelings, love, it’s just a picnic blanket.’

I look down. ‘There’s ants here.’

‘Of course there are ants, Eli, we’re in the bush.’

‘They’re crawling on our rug, though.’

‘Just flick them off.’

I try, but every time I get one off, another five come on.

‘Okay, here we go,’ says Dad, bringing over some plastic plates and a giant Jenga pile of bread.

‘And here are the fillings,’ says Mum. She puts down the meats, a plate with slices of tomato, cucumber and cheese, a small bag of leaves and a bottle of mayo.

‘Yum, I am so hungry,’ I say, grabbing my tummy.

‘Well, get it before the ants do,’ Dad grins. Then he looks around, as if he’s missing something. ‘We didn’t happen to bring the pickles, did we?’

Lexie groans. ‘You will not die without pickles in your sandwich, Dad!’

‘He actually will, though,’ I laugh. ‘Look at that face!’
